IT Chapter 3: Welcome to Derry is the much-anticipated continuation of the IT franchise, set to be released in 2025. This new chapter expands on Stephen King’s chilling universe, diving deeper into the origins of Pennywise the Dancing Clown, a villain that has haunted audiences since the release of It (2017) and It: Chapter Two (2019). Directed by Andy Muschietti, who returns to helm this series alongside his producing partner Barbara Muschietti, Welcome to Derry is a prequel set in the 1960s and focuses on the eerie town of Derry, Maine, long before the events of the earlier films.
The series is expected to explore the sinister roots of Pennywise, his extraterrestrial origins, and his connection to other aspects of King’s broader literary universe, including the Dark Tower series. Bill Skarsgård will reprise his iconic role as Pennywise, continuing his reign of terror in the town. The series also introduces new characters played by Taylour Paige, Jovan Adepo, and Stephen Rider, among others, as they become entangled with the malevolent forces that lurk in Derry.
Welcome to Derry will consist of nine episodes, with Muschietti directing four of them, including the premiere. Production began in Toronto in May 2023 but faced delays due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, pushing back the series’ premiere to 2025.
The show is expected to release on Max, with a brief teaser hinting at the horrifying atmosphere that fans can expect. The budget for IT Chapter 3: Welcome to Derry is estimated to be significant, considering the scale of its production and the involvement of high-profile talent, though exact figures are not yet confirmed
